Long-Distance Caregiving: Managing Care From 100+ Miles Away
Strategies for managing a parent's care remotely, including technology tools, local resources, communication plans, and building a care team.
Approximately 11% of family caregivers live more than an hour away from the person they care for. Long-distance caregiving brings unique challenges: guilt about not being there, difficulty monitoring day-to-day changes, and the stress of coordinating care from afar. But with the right systems, you can be an effective advocate for your parent from any distance.
Build a local care team. Identify people who can be your eyes and ears: a trusted neighbor, a nearby family member or friend, your parent's doctor, a home care aide, their faith community, or a geriatric care manager. Give each person your contact information and establish regular check-in times.
Technology can close the distance. Consider: medical alert systems (Life Alert, Medical Guardian) for fall detection and emergencies, smart home devices for medication reminders and video calls, smart thermostats and sensors that alert you to unusual patterns (no movement, doors not opened), pill dispensers that track whether medications are taken, and doorbell cameras to monitor who comes and goes.
Organize a communication plan. Set up a shared family calendar for appointments. Use a group text or family app (CaringBridge, Lotsa Helping Hands) to keep everyone updated. Schedule regular video calls with your parent and separate check-ins with their local support team. Keep a shared document with medications, doctor contacts, insurance information, and emergency plans.
Make the most of visits. When you can visit in person, focus on tasks that require your physical presence: attending doctor appointments, inspecting the home for safety hazards, meeting with caregivers, reviewing finances and mail, stocking up on supplies, and spending quality time. Do not try to do everything in one visit.
Hire a geriatric care manager. Also called aging life care professionals, these specialists assess your parent's needs, coordinate services, monitor care, attend medical appointments, and serve as your on-the-ground representative. They typically charge $100-$250 per hour but can be invaluable for long-distance caregivers. Find one through the Aging Life Care Association (aginglifecare.org).
Know your employer benefits. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for caregiving. Some employers offer paid caregiving leave, flexible schedules, employee assistance programs with caregiving support, or backup care services. Ask your HR department what is available.
Plan for emergencies. Have a plan in place before a crisis hits. Know which hospital your parent would go to, who has power of attorney, where important documents are kept, what your parent's wishes are for medical treatment (advance directives), and who can get to them quickly if you cannot. Keep a packed bag ready for last-minute trips.
